CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Warpath

The two fighters rose and fell over one another in the dimly lit tent like undulating waves that somehow lacked both rhythm and flow. Without vision to guide him, Rasp’s entire strategy revolved around getting his opponent to the floor. It seemed somewhat cruel that the moment he finally got Rali down and halfway into a decent chokehold was the same moment Captain Monk chose to intervene.

“Enough!” Instead of attempting to pry the fighters apart, the captain retrieved his waterskin from the small pile of neatly arranged belongings and dumped its contents over their heads. “Show some blasted restraint, both of you!” His shouting voice was somehow even louder than his normal, headache-inducing volume.

With her opponent’s grip loosened, Rali struggled free. She shoved Rasp to the side and staggered to her feet, but he wasn’t finished with her yet. He latched onto her leg and started to drag her back down. Lieutenant Ralizak rewarded his efforts by giving up on gravity altogether and sat, pinning the struggling human beneath her. “Apologies, Captain,” she huffed, crossing one stubby leg over the other as she fought to catch her breath. “Yesterday’s events seemed to have rattled Rasp’s memory. I find it helpful to remind him of the pecking order from time to time.”

Rasp flailed uselessly beneath her, gasping, “You started it!”

“Well, if you’d been more helpful with the eating part, you wouldn’t be wearing the soup right now, would you?” Rali snapped back.

“I see.” Captain Monk stroked his beard and nodded. The fact that one of the faithful four was actually listening to him for a change was apparently enough to soothe his former outrage. “I can only hope I do not have to remind him of the pecking order again myself!”

Rali tossed the quilt over Rasp’s head to muffle his heated reply. Once certain the others couldn’t distinguish whatever horrific things the mountain man was shouting, she offered the captain her most charming smile yet. “Well done, sir. You’ve gone and put the fear of the gods into him now!”

This was absolute madness. And to think she had been concerned about blending in before. At this rate, Daana may very well have been the most normal-acting person in the room. That realization was somehow more terrifying. Surely this had to be some sort of joke, even if only on a cosmic level.

Daana glanced over her shoulder, noting it would take but a few steps to slip away. To be clear, she wasn’t leaving. She was simply going to stand closer to the door. That way, if things continued to get out of hand, she could waltz free unscathed.

It was a good idea. A great idea. It was too bad her feet hadn’t gotten the message, because they seemed perfectly content to remain in place. Will you two move it, please? Shuffle over there, by the door, now!

Alas, just as her legs started to respond, Captain Monk remembered she was present and that, for some gods awful reason, he wished to speak with her.
